Working with a text is finding a balance between author and reader: staying true to the author's style, voice, and expression, yet ensuring that the words run so smoothly that the meaning is easily, fluidly and immediately accessibly to the reader.
Over the past eleven years I have worked as a freelance copy editor on master's and PhD dissertations for examination purposes and on articles, book chapters and books for publications, both in preparation for peer review and, afterwards, finalising the reworked manuscripts for publications. For many of these pieces for publication I worked with publishing houses, producing the texts in the format required for typesetting; for some I prepared print-ready manuscripts within Word.
I was the copy editor and editorial assistant for Anthropology Southern Africa from 2014 to 2024. I am currently the copy editor for the South African Historical Journal, a position I took over in 2022. For the last four years I have also worked on the special issues for the journal Ethnoscripts. The most challenging and rewarding work has been on book manuscripts which leading South African and international authors in history, anthropology, and sociology have entrusted to me.
I am based in Switzerland.
