Using Track Changes, Comments and Find & Replace Functions Productively in MS Word
Focus: The Track Changes and Comments functions will be demonstrated in the light of our need to communicate clearly with clients; the Find&Replace function’s great strength in helping us to working more consistently and accurately will be highlighted. The focus will primarily be on demonstrating the basic and most salient aspects of these functions, but Monica will also try to touch on a few possibly less familiar commands and options for the more seasoned users. You’ll learn how and when to switch Track Changes on and off, and to toggle between showing all, some or no changes as you’re working through a document. As a bonus, you’ll see how to install a Quick Access shortcut so that you can toggle more quickly between tracking and not tracking. You will learn how to insert and delete comments, where to change the style and language of the comments in your document, and one way to create shortcuts for frequently used comments. We will explore in some detail the Advanced Find functions and consider how they might be used to help you in your editing. We will briefly consider wildcards, but this webinar will not be a deep-dive into that topic.

More about our facilitator
Monica studied languages (Afrikaans, English and IsiXhosa), general linguistics and teaching at university. She began her working life as an English teacher and later became a linguistics lecturer at the University of the Western Cape. In 2008, she left UWC to venture out on her own as a language practitioner. In that year, she did John Linnegar’s editing course and became a member of PEG. Since March 2022 she has also become one of PEG’s accredited text editors (English). Monica has been training PEG members in using MS Word since 2017 and has enjoyed this opportunity to serve PEG. In teaching and learning, it has always been important to her that the outcomes should have practical impact, and this is what she hopes to achieve in these sessions.
Webinar format and what to bring
A pre-webinar exercise will be sent to participants to take them on a quick walkabout through the Word workspace to point out the most important commands in relation to the webinar topic. It is always easier to follow along if one is already somewhat familiar with the space.
The webinar will entail a practical demonstration and some participants may want to follow along on their own version of Word. For this purpose, a demonstration document will be made available shortly before the webinar and participants who want to follow along should please make sure they save it and have it open in Word before they sign in to the webinar.
Please note that demonstration will be limited to PC so that Mac users may struggle to follow, and, unfortunately, the facilitator would be unable to help.
Everyone who registers for the webinar will receive a recording of the event afterwards.
