About our facilitator

Sally Hofmeyr progressed as far as postdoc level in ecology, ornithology and conservation, but she was never convinced that academia was the right place for her. While ‘postdoccing’, she started doing freelance academic editing for a small online company (Uni-edit) as a way of bringing in some extra income while she worked out what to do next. By the time her second postdoc came to an end, she had finally identified her niche: editing! Since 2016, Sally has been a senior editor for Uni-edit, and in this role she edits, provides training and feedback to editors and translators, and participates in other aspects of running the business. She primarily edits academic articles in the biological sciences that are written by non-native speakers of English or translated into English in-house. As part of her work with Uni-edit, she frequently collaborates with other staff members in working on documents using Google Docs and Google Drive. She keeps a toe in the waters of real-life academia by helping with ornithological fieldwork from time to time. Some of that work involves collaborating with other academics using documents stored in DropBox. Until recently, she also used DropBox extensively while she was a member of her choir’s committee. Her experience of online collaboration, therefore, is relatively broad and not limited to editing-related work. Sally has been a member of PEG since 2017, and in 2020 she qualified as an Accredited Text Editor (English). She joined the PEG Exco as secretary and the Accreditation Test examiner team in 2021.

About the webinar

The purpose of the webinar is to demonstrate how to use some of the most popular online-collaboration platforms: Google Docs, Google Drive, DropBox and WeTransfer. Google Docs and DropBox are incredibly useful for any situation in which a group of people needs to work together on a single document, and/or when a document needs to be accessible in its most up-to-date form to several people at once. Google Drive, DropBox and WeTransfer are useful tools for transferring large files and/or storing them in a central location where several people can access them at once. The webinar will cover the basics of setting up an account on each of these platforms, sharing files with others, receiving and downloading files, and editing files online.
