Grammar Gremlins, Part III
Grammar Gremlins Part 3: A pétillant potpourri of problematic usages and how to correct them
Join PEG for a webinar about a mixed bag of commonly committed errors in English writing, including the positioning of only, unparallel constructions, the misuse of correlative conjunctions, that most problematic pronoun pair (that and which), much-abused prepositions … and your own pet peeves.
Attendees are invited to send the presenter their gripes with problematic usage by at least three days prior to the webinar. Or to raise them in the Q&A time during the webinar. Every attempt will be made to include the responses during this session.
Date: Thursday, 12 December 2024
Time: 18:00–20:00
Place: Online (Zoom meeting)
Facilitator: John Linnegar
Level: Intermediate
CPD hours: PEG members will earn CPD hours according to the criteria published on the PEG website. Attendees of the live
presentation will receive a certificate confirming their attendance and the duration of the webinar. Those who are
unable to attend the webinar live may submit their receipt as proof of having received the recording.
Prerequisites/foundational knowledge: Introductory/intermediate, depending on an attendee’s familiarity with or competence in these usages in a variety of contexts. Or their lack of/need for sound grammatical reasons for the corrections they make.
Pre-webinar materials: A set of passages in which this collection of problematic usages are present, for correction.
About our facilitator
John Linnegar has been a teacher and trainer, and a passionate improver of writers’ words, during a career spanning 40+ years. As a mother-tongue speaker of English, he has published two textbooks on English usage: Engleish, our Engleish: Common Errors in South African English and how to resolve them (Pharos, 2013) and, with Ken McGillivray, grammar, punctuation and all that jazz … (MLA Publishers, 2019). He has also been a regular contributor of articles on English Grammar to PEGboard and of presentations to SENSE, MET, ITI and IPEd members.
About the webinar
During this webinar, a veritable potpourri of the thornier aspects of incorrect usage will be covered. A set of sentences containing typical errors involving these types of error will be sent to the registrants beforehand; it will be worked through during the session. And if anyone does send in any questions or problems relating to these parts of speech beforehand, or raises them during the Q&A session, these will be responded to. Hopefully, by the end of this webinar, the attendees will be armed with sound grammatical reasons for the corrections they make to these types of authors’ incorrect usage.
