Grammar Gremlins, Part I
Grammar Gremlins Part 1: A vainglory of verbs: Incorrect usages and how to correct them
Join PEG for a webinar about aspects of subject–verb agreement (concord), verb tenses, especially simple past vs present perfect, modal verbs, infinitive vs gerundive forms, and dangling participles.
Date: Thursday, 10 October 2024
Time: 18:00–20:00
Place: Online (Zoom meeting)
Facilitator: John Linnegar
Level: Introductory/intermediate, depending on an attendee’s familiarity with or competence at using verbs in a variety of contexts. Or their lack of/need for sound grammatical reasons for the corrections they make.
CPD hours: PEG members will earn CPD hours according to the criteria published on the PEG website. Attendees of the live presentation will receive a certificate confirming their attendance and the duration of the webinar. Those who are unable to attend the webinar live may submit their receipt as proof of having received the recording.
Prerequisites/foundational knowledge: No previous knowledge or experience is necessary. Attendees are invited to send the presenter their gripes with verb usage by at least three days prior to the webinar. Or to raise them in the Q&A time during the webinar. Every attempt will be made to include the responses during this session.
Pre-webinar materials: A set of passages will be provided in which problematic verb usages are present.
This is part of a three-part series:

About our facilitator
John Linnegar has been a teacher and trainer, and a passionate, sympathetic improver of writers’ words, during a career spanning 40+ years. As a mother-tongue speaker of English, he has published two textbooks on English usage: Engleish, our Engleish: Common Errors in South African English and how to resolve them (Pharos, 2013) and, with Ken McGillivray, grammar, punctuation and all that jazz … (MLA Publishers, 2019). He has also been a regular contributor of articles on English Grammar to PEGboard and of presentations to SENSE, MET, ITI and IPEd members.
About the webinar
During this webinar, some of the thornier aspects of incorrect verb usage will be covered and the set of sentences sent to attendees beforehand will be worked through. And if anyone does send in any questions or problems relating to verbs beforehand, or raise them during the webinar, these will be responded to. Hopefully, by the end of this webinar, the attendees will be armed with sound grammatical reasons for the corrections they make to authors’ incorrect verb usage.
