Formatting Word documents Part 2

Join PEG for our webinar series, where you will have the opportunity to upgrade your knowledge and skills as editors and proofreaders in a variety of ways: linguistic, stylistic, business, digital, technical, professional and more. Using Microsoft Word to format your work will prepare documents so they look good and enable you to edit them speedily and competently, showing them off to best advantage.

Focus: During this second webinar, you will learn several more advanced or sophisticated formatting functions, based on documents supplied before Part 1. The formatting hints and tips will help you in your editing, and the content of the documents will equip you for perfecting the formatting of your clients’ documents.

Date: Thursday, 19 October 2023

Time: 18:00 to 20:30

Place: Online (Zoom meeting)

Facilitator: Anne Denniston

CPD hours: Attendees will receive a certificate confirming their attendance and their having earned 2,5 hours’ worth of core CPD; those who opt to view the video recording of the webinar instead, without actually attending, will earn 30 minutes’ worth of discretionary CPD time.

About our facilitator

Anne Denniston trained as a librarian using Word Perfect. She then edited agricultural reports, loved it, and so became a freelance editor of all sorts of documents. She taught herself Word and Excel while compiling policies and procedures for ISO compliance. For more than 11 years, she edited audit reports and taught auditors and their admin staff to format various audit reports for the Gauteng Provincial Government.

About the webinar

Attendees will receive an instruction manual and an unformatted version of a quotation letter. You will be expected to prepare for the webinar by following the first few instructions in the manual – for moving around in the document and for creating keyboard shortcuts. In the webinar, Anne will share her screen as she follows the manual in the course of formatting the unformatted letter. She will move around the document and use the keyboard shortcuts while she shows and explains how to see hidden text, make fields show as grey, set margins, format a table/logo, format a picture, go to the header, format section breaks, format font colour, redo actions, use paragraph tabs and indents, find and replace, format dates, format fields, convert text to a table, use autotext entries, work with footers, correct page numbering, understand section breaks (and link to previous), work with watermarks, understand paragraph spacing, make all headings keep-with-next.

After Part 1, you will be expected to work through the manual and the video of the webinar afterwards, stopping and starting the video as necessary, to practice what you were shown at your own speed. This will prepare you for the follow-up webinar on 19 October, when you will be able to discuss what you have learned and any problems you encountered. You will also learn how to finalise the quotation letter in a number of ways.
