CURIOUSER AND CURIOUSER … LET’S GET DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE!

A talk with two hats, Dr Tiema HM and Dr Richard Steele

But is it plagiarism?

Editors, writers and AI

Join us Thursday, 29 May, 2025 @ 5 pm!

This is the first in a series of informal discussions about the ethical and practical considerations of dealing with, inter alia, suspected plagiarism when using AI.

Universities and places of learning are coming to grips with how much and how far to endorse LLMs. The obvious advantages and disadvantages aside, AI is established in many enterprises and learning centres where the hardware is built to suit their businesses.

Join the discussion with colleagues Dr Tiema Haji Muindi (Dr Tiema HM) – who confronts AI in the newsroom and Dr Richard Steele – who confronts it in academic work.

Want to start digging? Richard’s given us a few questions as clues in the meantime:

  1. Is using AI-generated text a version of plagiarism?
  2. Is it possible to know if the information we are editing is plagiarised? If we notice it, what should we do about it?
  3. Is it possible to know whether an author is using AI to write material? If we notice it, what should we do about it?
  4. What does a hallucinated AI reference look like? If we notice it, what should we do about it?

Here’s how to get ready for the big dig:
