Coffee Conversation: Diversity and Inclusion

LET’S DO THIS! Let’s kick the year off and talk about D&I.

Why, you may ask? Because we’re all in this together, we need one another, but we may unwittingly tread on one another’s toes. Am I guilty of ‘othering’, or do I reject it because I don’t like the new language used to describe old bias?

We’re going to have a go at unravelling unanswered questions and concerns raised in the anonymous responses to the PEG D&I questionnaire and we’ll open the floor.

  • Are we mindful that we have influence and reach as editors?
  • How do you practise diversity and inclusion?
  • Do you call out virtue signalling when you spot it?
  • Can we curtail microaggressions and unconscious bias?

Let’s have a frank and open discussion about a global issue that continues to blight us. Give the D&I statement on our website a quick shufti.

On FRIDAY, 31 JANUARY at 5:00 pm, Ursula Arends will launch our discussion for 5 or 10 minutes. Ursula has been working on the D&I committee with other PEG members, she has been a reliable stalwart of equity and equality and is a bastion of fairness.

We really want as many contributions as possible, so to protect your privacy we will not record it. We look forward to hearing the thoughts and ideas of a broader base of our colleagues.
