Question

Does anyone have access to an updated urban dictionary or reference for contemporary terminology? If it leans heavily towards scholarly use, I’d appreciate it.

Answer 1

Though not a dictionary, I’ve found the following two resources quite helpful in terms of ethical and inclusive language use:
1. The Conscious Style Guide: It has different categories (including one for gender) with links out to other guides: https://consciousstyleguide.com/
2. University of Washington IT Inclusive Language Guide: Though aimed specifically at the IT/tech sector, it is also quite useful and straightforward, and gives examples of alternative terminology to use in place of possibly problematic language: https://it.uw.edu/guides/identity-diversity-inclusion/inclusive-language-guide/#list

You might also find the Pocket Queerpedia (published in English, Afrikaans and isiXhosa) useful: https://www.tshisimani.org.za/pocket-queerpedia-download/
