WC informal branch meeting and AGM

The committee of the Western Cape branch of PEG cordially invite you to attend a branch meeting in the committee room of the Pinelands Library.

Venue: Pinelands Library, Howard Place, Howard Drive, Pinelands (conveniently abutting the secure parking area). The committee room is situated on the first floor of the library, accessible by lift or stairs directly from the lobby. Secure parking is available directly in front of the library.

Date: Saturday, 6 May

Time: 09:30 for 10:00 to 12:00

Apart from this being another face-to-face networking opportunity for our local members (for which there will be ample opportunity), it will also include the branch’s annual general meeting (AGM), as required by PEG’s Constitution. In addition, our presenter on this occasion will be micro-publisher and PEG member Vanessa Wilson, who will be talking to us about what micro- and self-publishing entails, including the roles of editors and proofreaders in this area. In particular, in her presentation entitled Editing for the self-publishing market – getting started, Vanessa will cover these aspects of this fascinating topic (and, hopefully, help to demystify this niche for some of us):

  1. An introduction to self-publishing – understanding the varied landscape
  2. An overview of self-publishing production and publishing processes
  3. Editorial requirements in a self-publishing context and how they differ from other contexts
  4. Your unique role and what’s in it for you
  5. About the money – publishing budgets, rates and payment structures
  6. Being an ambassador for responsible self-publishing
  7. Attendee Q&A.

Cost: Free; but we do ask those of you whose surnames commence with the letters N to Z please to bring along a plate of sweet or savoury snacks.

Tea, coffee, fruit juice and water will be provided. And copies of the PEG guides and other publications will be on sale. Also, the Pinelands Library has a book-sale nook that has some wonderful books on offer at bargain prices, so do take a peek there at some stage during the morning.

The Agenda for the AGM and the Branch Annual Report will be circulated to all branch members prior to the meeting. We also invite members to consider making themselves available for a position on the close-knit branch committee, which has a fairly informal structure and on which tasks are shared. Please contact our branch secretary, Simthandile Mhlamibiso, or any of the committee members, if you would like to offer your services or need more information about the committee.

She started and runs the online indie store Publisher.co.za and has recently launched the Yes!Press imprint for authors with polished, publishing-ready manuscripts seeking an affordable and quick-to-market, package-based solution.
