PEG WC in-person event

Kykie, we’re inviting you to join us at our next branch gathering for a topic somewhat off the beaten track. Monica Bosman will be interviewing Prof. Quentin Williams, director of the Centre for Multilingualism and Diversities Research at the University of the Western Cape on the development of Kaaps and the forthcoming trilingual dictionary of Kaaps. Along the way, they’ll discuss Prof Williams’s own linguistic journey and his work as an academic and language activist, and they’ll probably use words like ‘minoritisation,’ ‘standardisation’ and ‘laaitie’. The interview will be conducted mainly in English, but be ready for some codeswitching gamieks in between.

As always, there’ll be opportunities for Q&A and further discussion after the interview and time to network with your fellow language practitioners. We also look forward to welcoming any members who may be attending for the first time, as well as those we haven’t seen for a while.

And don’t forget to visit the “secondhand bookstore” just inside the library itself for some reading matter at bargain basement prices.

Time: 09:30 for 10:00 to 12:30

Venue: Pinelands Library Hall (on the first floor), Howard Place, Howard Drive, Pinelands

Fee: Free, although if your surname begins with any letter in the first half of the alphabet (A–M), please bring along a plate of your favourite sweet or savoury snacks. Tea, coffee, fruit juice and water, and also an urn, crockery, cutlery and glasses, will be supplied.

Parking: There’s secure parking directly in front of the library.

CPD hours: Remember, you will earn yourself core CPD hours for attending this formal PEG event. And a friendly reminder to please forward any questions you may have for Prof Williams or Monica to our branch secretary, Tania Wait, by Monday, 28 July.
