Elizabeth Manning Murphy

Canberran Elizabeth Manning Murphy is a linguist, a consultant in communication skills, a Distinguished Editor of the Institute of Professional Editors (IPEd) and an honorary life member of the Institute and the Canberra Society of Editors. Elizabeth works internationally, mentoring and training writers and editors. She has also been a teacher, a university lecturer and a management consultant, and has written many books, most recently the second editions of Effective Writing: Plain English at work (2014) and also of Working words (2019). In 2020, she was awarded IPEd’s inaugural Janet Mackenzie Medal for her exemplary service to the editing profession over a long time. Elizabeth and Janet were long-time colleagues in IPEd; they both served on the committee that set up the Institute’s accreditation exam in 2007 and, in 2011–2012 collaborated on an appendix on Australian English in Text Editing (2012). Until recently, Elizabeth also co-directed IPEd’s mentoring scheme after first having investigated the CIEP, PEG and other schemes.
