Hiding white space (the top and bottom margins of your pages, which contain headers and footers) allows you to scroll faster through the document.
You can hide and unhide the white space either at the top of the document or in the margins between pages. The mouse pointers and tooltips are the same in both places. If your margins are showing, Word lets you hide them. If your margins are hidden, Word lets you unhide them.
To hide/unhide at the top of the document: Press Ctrl+Home to go to the beginning of the document, put your cursor in the ‘crack’ just below the ribbon. Double-click when the mouse pointer changes. If your margins are showing, the pointer will have arrows facing each other and a tooltip says, ‘Double-click to hide white space’.
To hide/unhide between pages: Put your cursor on the line between any two pages and double-click when the mouse pointer changes. If your margins are hidden, the pointer will have arrows facing away from each other and a tooltip says, ‘Double-click to show white space’.
Note: Older versions of Microsoft only let you hide/unhide white space if you put your cursor on the crack or on the page break line in a left or right margin. You also cannot do this if you are in a header or footer; you have to be in the body text.
