Journals and institutions in the field of science\, technology\, engineering and mathematics often insist that their authors and students use it\, claiming that it is easier to use than Microsoft Word. But their work still needs editing. \nThese webinars introduce the LaTeX screens and terminology so that you can see past the computer language to the text that needs to be edited in the usual way. \nAbout our facilitator \nAnne did a 6-week online course on LaTeX so she could edit a master’s thesis on AI for the daughter of a friend. The daughter introduced her to Overleaf’s overlay so they could collaborate on the LaTeX document\, tracking changes and sharing comments. Anne found it fascinating to work in the LaTeX environment and has taken on several other LaTeX projects since then. Those who sat the 2024 test should bring their completed tests to the webinar/workshop to enable them to discover where they could have performed better. \nAbout our presenters\nJohn Linnegar has been a teacher and trainer\, and a setter of more tests and examinations than he cares to remember\, during a career spanning 40+ years. He has also acted as an external marker and moderator for examinations set by the Western Cape Department of Education and national examinations. He has been a copy-editor and proofreader for some time now\, specialising in school and academic textbooks\, non-fiction works and\, more recently\, journal articles\, theses and dissertations\, too. He researched and compiled PEG’s Accreditation Test curriculum\, launched the first-ever PEG Accreditation Test in 2020\, and has been a co-examiner of PEG’s first six Accreditation Tests and also one of the markers. John has also published several textbooks on aspects of English and copy-editing and proofreading. \nRicky Woods qualified as an Accredited Text Editor (English) in 2021 and has been a member of the Accreditation Test examiner team for three years now\, from 2023 to 2026\, as both proofreader and examiner/marker. (She also wrote the Accreditation test twice – the first time ‘for practice’). Now retired\, she was a high school English teacher for close on 40 years. She has spent the past 15 of them focusing more deliberately on upskilling for her ‘new’ career. Finally\, we’ll look at what copy editors can do to manage these variable ‘voices’ in texts so that we are freed from the frustration and fear that AI seems to evoke. Autumn A. Arnett\, Executive Director of the Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA)\, USA\, will shed light on advancing equity in professional organisations. Simthandile Skondo\, PEG colleague\, founder and managing director of Mpilo Publishing\, will discuss her commitment to supporting self-publishing South African authors of colour. Sofía Jarrín\, Spanish/English academic editor and translator\, will elaborate on the role of DEI in supporting multilingual authors who produce manuscripts in English. \nThe webinar will be facilitated by Ursula Arends\, PEG member\, Accredited Text Editor (ATE) and convenor of the PEG DEI Working Group. \nAbout our panellists\nAutumn Arnett is an executive leader\, storyteller\, and speaker whose work centres around equity\, inclusion\, and justice in leadership. She currently serves as the Executive Director of the Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA)\, a global membership organisation dedicated to advancing community\, expertise\, and opportunity in the freelancing profession. Autumn’s first book\, Let’s Stop Calling It an Achievement Gap\, was released by Information Age Publishing in January 2019. It explores the systemic issues that impact equity in education through ten city-based case studies\, highlighting the state of education for Black children around the United States. She is the 2022 winner of the American Consortium for Equity in Education’s Special Contributions to Equity Award for her work to advance solutions in K-12 and higher education. \nSimthandile Skondo\, our PEG colleague\, is a very dynamic and versatile individual. She’s currently in training to be a Professional Accountant\, while also running a self-publishing company and assisting aspiring authors. Her love for books and their impact propelled her to start Mpilo Publishing (Pty) Ltd. For the past eight years of managing the company\, engaging with local aspiring authors and freelancers\, she has acquired a reasonable amount of knowledge and experience to understand how to work well with all parties to ensure a win/win paradigm of interaction between everyone involved. \nSofia Jarrin is an academic\, nonprofit\, and fiction copy editor\, proofreader\, and translator with over a decade of experience. She has worked with academic publishers and nonprofit institutions in the United States and Latin America. Her commitment as an editor is to apply a conscious reading to all her editing work by respecting the writer’s background\, country of origin\, and lived experience. She is 100% bilingual in English and Spanish and can read French and Portuguese. He has also acted as an external marker and moderator for examinations set by the Western Cape Department of Education and national examinations. Besides having been a copy-editor and proofreader for some time now\, specialising in school and academic textbooks\, non-fiction works and now journal articles\, theses and dissertations\, too\, he has been a co-examiner of PEG’s first six Accreditation Tests and also one of the markers. The Accreditation Test falls four square within his PEG portfolio of Accreditation Coordinator. John has also published several texts on aspects of English and copy-editing and proofreading. \nSally Hofmeyr started out as an ornithologist and conservationist\, but along the way she took up academic editing to help pay the bills and ultimately realised this was the career for her. For over 10 years\, editing was her mainstay. From 2016 to 2025\, Sally was a senior editor for Uni-edit\, a small online academic editing company\, and in that role she edited\, provided training and feedback to editors and translators\, and participated in other aspects of running the business. In 2025 she returned to her academic roots at the University of Cape Town\, but she continues to edit occasionally and to be interested and involved in PEG and in helping editors to hone their skills. Sally has been a member of PEG since 2017. Those who are unable to attend the webinar live may submit their receipt as proof of having received the recording. \nPre-webinar materials: \nPrior to the webinar series\, registrants will be provided with an exercise in detecting and correcting erroneous usages of the comma\, an exemplar of perfectly used punctuation taken from the preface of GV Carey’s book Mind the Stop: A brief guide to punctuation (Penguin\, 1973) and a recommended list of publications that are devoted to punctuation and its use in the English language. \nAbout the webinar\nEach of the three webinars in this series will focus in detail on particular uses and abuses of the comma. As Lukeman (at 31) reminds us\, the comma has few hard rules and as a result it is the mark most often misused (and misunderstood). This contention is supported by Gowers (at 242): ‘The use of commas cannot be learned by rule. … The correct use of the comma – if there is such a thing as “correct” use – can only be acquired by common sense\, observation and taste. This renders it the mark most open to interpretation. Yet\, based on frequency of use alone\, the comma wields tremendous influence in sentences\, outnumbering the full stop by at least 3 to 1 and the other punctuation marks by at least 5 to 1! \nWhat complicates matters\, too\, is that the comma can be used to divide\, yet it can also be used to connect. … Both divider and connector\, the comma is schizophrenic (Lukeman\, 32). \nSo\, in these three webinars we’ll be covering more than 20 correct\, meaningful uses of the comma and about another dozen incorrect uses\, plus some contentious usages. As a result\, you should leave this series not having fallen into a com(m)a but\, instead\, with a veritable compendium of the dos and don’ts about the use of this punctuation mark that should stand you in good stead to do justice to writers’ (imperfectly punctuated) words. \nAbout our facilitator\nJohn Linnegar has been a passionate pro/exponent and user of the English language – which is by no means an easy tongue to master and write in – since being taught it ‘proper’ at both junior and high school. You’ll learn how to build your own stylesheets with customised spelling and hyphenation rules and preferences for italics\, subscripts\, capitalisation\, punctuation and more. This webinar builds on the introduction to Wildcard Find and Replace in MS Word.* We’ll go through the various wildcard characters and what they do\, learn to construct wildcard expressions and try them out on loads of practical examples. \nWildcards are special characters in MS Word’s Find and Replace that may be used to find text that matches a given pattern instead of specific text. It’s great for finding all occurrences of a usage\, even when you don’t know the exact content in advance. For example\, you may wish to search for any number followed by a letter (for finding unspaced units of measurement) or any two capital letters (for identifying initialisms/abbreviations).
